Well, glad you are ok. I am no expert but i always keep an eye on the bottom making sure its 1. not too thick and clunky. and 2. it doesnt become a funnel...plus it just feels better when they are...
I am curious as to where the recess was compared to where the center piece split off. Wondering if the expansion of the chuck magnified the pressure where it split...had a close call with that once...

Related question.... I have used Fornbys "tung oil" and sanded with it to fill pores and if I use it on lighter woods the pores turn dark and seem to stand out because of it...I have tried boiled...

it was recommended to me not to use bought eye screws any more ...so I make these instead...glue it in a hole and looks nice...not too big...this is stainless steel wire I had on hand...

I make some things out of branches and have found that the larger you leave them the less thing happen to them. leave the forks real long and i thin you may find less damage done...when i rough turn...
the glue method should work....or I use Zizzner's spray shellac while still in the chuck, give it a few minutes to dry, hard as a rock.

I dont have a knock off but I rub mine on a diamond stone and the edge comes up nice!!!!!
