Very nice dovetailing. I like to chamfer (Shamfer) the corner of through dovetails for a final touch. The light reflects from the wood and from some angles the joint looks like a half-blind (Lap)...

I just had another look at the job you want to do.
If you could clamp all the pieces together, you could do all seven housings/dadoes in one go, with the router.

I think so too.

But if you have to use a machine, do it with a router. That's what a router is good at; hogging out. Plus, it's safer and quicker than a hand-held, power saw.

I am thinking of a Hock as a replacement blade for a No. 4 I have.
Am I alone in thinking that the Hock Blade, with its square profile, makes a plane look a bit clunky? And I wonder does Ron make...

Tip over. Sometimes I find the No 5 topples over, the plane body that is. Doesn't happen so easily with a Number 4 due to the short length. The wide blades have more of a base to rest on.

But I find in the longer planes 5 and a half F/I, the wider blade/body is less inclined to topple on wide boards. Narrow boards it don't make much difference nohow!

The Leigh Dovetail jig does much more than just cut dovetails.

You can buy various templates to allow finger joints and through mortice and tenons....

I reckon as long as your tools are halfway decent, they can always be made to perform better. Once they are working well, then you can't blame them if things go wrong.

I favour the Leigh, but there is one other jig I use for run of the mill drawers for kitchens and workshops etc.

Don't forget... You can use a panel saw for wide, deep tenons.

Tenons mostly involve rip-cuts so a dovetail saw will do the job. I use a dovetail saw for sawing dovetails. Nothing else, but...
