My lovely partner has asked me to build a box. We travel to historical recreation events by car, and want a box to hold our dishes to be used during...
Thanks, Don, but making one out of scrap is really not an option right now. I don't have enough scrap, and I bought cheap lumber as it is because money is rather tight.
As for durability, this is...
oooh yes please!
Resurrecting this thread, I noticed today that this issue is available online at Cloverleaf.com for 99 cents. Cloverleaf Issue

I used a 2x6 for a mobile base once just because all the 2x4's were awful. 2x10 should/could make some OK 2x4's.
Keep in mind all the construction lumber has a lot more moisture than furniture...
I'm trying to post a picture to the forum instead of linking. Let's see how this goes... seemed to work.
Here's the page the image is from:...
My wife and I do some period re-enactment camping. While this folding wash stand is not the period we play in, it's certainly better than using a bench for washing dishes. But I'd rather make one to...
I have Freud's heavy duty rip for thicker stock. Used it on some 8 foot ash poles last weekend and the cuts were beautiful. I plan to use it on 8/4 ash for my new workbench coming up.
Like Chip said, more light. It reduces the size of your pupil, making it more like a pinhole, which would have perfect focus, but you'd need a LOT of light for that.
Taken from another recent thread here...
- Your fence could have a curve, or not be plumb along the entire height you need.
- Your trunnions could be loose, even a little.
I'm still pretty new, but be sure your fence and blade are parallel, and that you're feeding the board straight. That last part can be really difficult with long boards... but 20" should not be an...
That hasn't seemed to happen with elm, but that's not as desirable a wood. It's still pretty cheap, when you can find it at all. What's happened to the price of, say, chestnut?
Oh yes, sign me up, please.
I'm (still) taking down an American (white) elm in my yard. I worked with it a bit while it was wet (had new tools to try out!) and I found the sawdust to be ... unpleasant. It caused itching and a...
A forum is a great thing, and SMC is one of the best for many reasons.
But organized research and practical tips and articles is not one of its goals. It sounds to me like you want a Wiki or a...
I'm still new at this, but I just got an e-mail with an article about wood movement. It said... hmm... how to explain without a picture...
Wood does NOT move lengthwise very much. That is, a ten...
You could slice it very thin and make Viking or Shaker oval boxes out of it. Then drying would be very quick.
Consider me opted in.
Thanks, Troy!
I got one of these on sale too, but the shop is just too cold. Yesterday morning the weather man said May is looking good for a warmup in these parts.
Put me in the pool, please.
Just thinking here, but it seems to me the slots (or at least the last finishing step) would be machined simultaneously on something that moves the table across stationary cutters, ensuring they are...
Many years ago, my sister came home to find her boyfriend at the time using a drill to whip a meringue for lemon meringue pie in a 5 gallon pail. She thought no man would do that for anything but his...
If you're worried about trimming the round corners of a 2x4 off, you could buy 2x6 and cut both edges off. I did that for a mobile base a couple of months ago. (Mostly I bought the 2x6 because it was...
Mr. Schwarz said in his talk at WIA that a sharp edge cuts better, and that the shinier it is, the longer the edge will last. It tempts me to get out the rouge and polish the bevel once just to see...
