I don't have a set, but I have 1 sword steel chisel from Misugi. One of my nicest, though I don't like it as much as my Tasai- they are almost the same size (18 mm, or so), but the Tasai just seems...

Funny you mention a canoe. I'm still in the army, and move around a bit, so I never know what kind of shop I will have. I just went from a 3-car space to one car- and I have a canoe. My solution was...

I've had mine for about 12 years or so. I never really finished it, but it does have drawers underneath. No sliding deadman, and no tool tray. Here are my thoughts:
    First, the drawers under the...

Am I the only one who doesn't use a tail vise? I built a Shaker style bench years ago, tail vise and leg vise. I started using it, but found that I work much faster without it. I just plane against a...

    Good question.

I have no idea what "right" is with reference to the feet. They are not under any kind of lateral load, since the piece just sits there. So I am not sure it makes a difference. Any ideas?

    Thanks

Thanks for the comments and the well-wishes.
This project was lots of fun, but it was a challenge to say the least. Mainly because of the wood. The mahogany was a bear due to the ever-reversing...

    It's done!

Well, I finally finished the armoire. This was supposed to be done a LONG time ago. I had to finish before I go to Afghanistan in a couple weeks, so that was a good impetus to get back to it. Here is...

    A comment

Dave, Thanks for unlocking the thread.
I'd like to make a comment here. This is a forum about hand tools and hand tool techniques. We are all here, I presume, to learn from each other. It isn't...

Uh oh, the cocobolo test again!

Wilbur, I remember this post and the consternation it caused!
I think we are all in violent agreement on this issue, just stating it differently.
I use both J tools and western, and I fully agree...

    That's strange

Mike, I have two Shapton professional stones, and they are not like yours. Mine have some type of backing bonded to the stone, and are definitely not usable on both sides. I wonder if they changed at...

Unless your professional stones are different than mine, you cannot turn them over. The professional stones are bonded to another material (kind of white/grey in color). You can only use the colored...

    Mine is ash

My top is ash, 8/4, flat sawn. I have had no issues at all with it. I used pretty heavy breadboard ends, and the base is DF. Use ash with confidence it will make a great bench.

  14. Lots of progress and some more pics

Here is some of the work I've finished on the upper case. Got the face frame glued on today (not pictured), and the shelves started for the upper case. I just had to take a pic with the whole thing...

This is the progress on the rails.
You can see a close up of the divider installed. This almost much wraps up the lower case. I still need to stick the moulding that will go around the top, and also...
  16. More pics

Here is an update on where I am at on this project.

The first pic shows the case assembled, sans rails. Next you can see the beginnings of the rails. They are poplar, and the divider is mahogany.
  17. Good point, John

You are right that the grain of the mahogany may be a bit much, and that the frame/ panel will conflict with the cubbies. Never thought of it that way. I was at the shop today looking at wood, and...
  18. Top details

Here is what the top will look like...
About an inch narrower and shallower than the bottom, and with two large, frame and panel doors. Then, when the doors are open, you will see what looks like a...
  19. Ship-lapped

Yea, that is what I was thinking. If I did that, I would have to do it with Mahogany, though, right? If I go with a secondary wood, I would have to stain or dye it to match, and that might pose a...
  20. Re Japanese saw...

I understand about the set on both sides of the saw. Actually, I am primarily a western saw user. You can't tell in that pic, but I am actually cutting about 3/16" or so off the end. For whatever...
  21. African Mahogany

Yup, it's african mahogany. Yup, never again.
Bob, yes, it is poplar with mahogany glued to it. That is the top (bottom is the same). Remember, the top case will sit completely on the bottom case,...

This is where I am at right now. So far, I have put in about 3 1/2 days work to get to this point. The dovetails went surprisingly slow. This mahogany is tough stuff! Also, I have never done a...
  23. Still more...

So what did I do to get rid of the tearout? Did I use my infil smoother? No luck. My LN LA jack with steep bevel? No luck. Scraper? Works, but slow. Well, this little stanley no 110, $5 on ebay (cost...

These are some more shot of prep for the first side panel. Planing the rabbets was more hard work, though it was fun to peal off those thick shavings. I did have to clean all of them up with a...

Here are some pics of scrub planing, cross cutting, and sharpening the rip saw. This project is physically wearing me out! It was nice to take a break and sharpen the saw. That scrub plane is one I...
