IMO, the cleanest way is to make two cuts on the tablesaw, one with the piece horizontal on the table, the second with the piece vertical. Of course featherboards or the like will help with stability...
I've made and own a couple of bokken out of domestic hickory- not quite as heavy as the Japanese oak ones I've purchased, but they seem to splinter less as they age. Though the hickory ones are a few...
I'm no expert, but I've seen YouTube video of guys making railings for stairs with bent lams. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqqT9cpsTx0
Also, using something like bicycle inner tube wrapped...
I've had good experience brushing water-based finishes with a foam brush. General finishes, Miniwax, et.al. Don't brush back and forth as they dry quickly, sand lightly between coats, and they dry...
No plans as far as I know. Woodworker's name is Eben Blaney, and he has a few quite lovely designs. There are a few images on his site, I imagine you could get a pretty close approximation of what he...
311974 Here's another contemporary idea. I second Chris Schwarz's article as well.
I own one as well. Don't have the specs (I'm not at the shop at present), but I can highly recommend the machine.
is your blade sharp? A dull blade can pull on your stock, especially if one side of the blade has more build-up of resin/pich/whatever...
Check out Akeda dovetail jig. I've used one for 5+ years now. Easier to set up and use than Leigh jigs with the trade off that there is slightly less freedom for pin size.
+1. I have personal experience- at first sunlight darkens cherry, but after prolonged exposure to strong sunlight, the cherry will fade. I live in New Mexico and have a cabinet under an east facing...
Been using it in my table for 4+ years, used it by hand for 1 or 2 before that. Never a problem .
I agree about the aesthetic possibilities a shelf offers. In my case, however, the client wasn't crazy about that idea, and here in New Mexico, dust is a real issue, and something close to the floor...
Yes, that's true, thanks. And if that stretcher were oriented vertically, the taper would be more pronounced. It's also possible to wedge the thru tenon from the side, maybe not as interesting...
Thanks for the feedback. I hadn't much thought of the racking issue. The upper rails (the long ones) I had planned to join to the short cross rails with shouldered lap joints which ought to help...
Hello all- First post here, though I've been lurking on and off for quite some time. Been trying to design an "entryway table" for a client, and the process has been somewhat trying. Client doesn't...
There is also a plug-in, "Round Corner" that will do exactly that, in seconds (Bevels too). I think I got it from ruby Library Depot- search the FWW blog for Dave R's write up on it.
+1 on adding the inch symbol to your dimensions- if you set the default to "feet and inches" then you may be confusing Sketchup. Perhaps before you made that change your default units were metric and...
if you plane a small "flat" on the inside of the face at the two outer sides of the front you give yourself a flat flace for layout and eliminate the potential gap that would be left if you didn't...
Michael- I like your general idea. Here's a thought I had- I'm not sure if the piece seems "integrated" to me. By that I mean, the legs/aprons are angled, mitered, and splayed, whereas the breadboard...
I second the FWW blog, make sure to search the archives! And also the book, "Sketchup for Dummies", a great way to get a good overview.
