Thanks, John. I tried it in both directions and had tear out both ways.
Thanks for all the good suggestions. I'll probably buy the 38 degree.
Thanks,
Bill
Ok, I got my new LV apron plane, and I love it. It's really a nice size and weight and was amazingly sharp right out of the box (not that it stopped me from honing the blade a little more :D)....
Thanks, Fred. I wish the judges I see in court were as kind about my writing as you!
For what it's worth, I decided to buy the Veritas low angle apron plane. LV is having a free shipping offer...
Thanks, Mike. And, a good suggestion. I have a friend who has a brother who may be able to hook me up for a test drive . . .
As for the WoodRiver, I'll admit to leaning away from companies who do...
As the original poster, I've been following the discussion with much interest . . . couldn't help following it, since I subscribed to the thread :-). Unfortunately I still haven't found a block plane...
We had a very busy weekend. First it was two outdoor staining projects: the pergola over the patio in the back, and then the porch and barn timbers on the the front of the house.
Next we...
I've been hunting for a used L-N or Veritas adjustable mouth block plane on ebay, but the prices they are going for always seem awfully high, frequently well over $100. Is that what I can expect? ...
I recently bought a used Delta hybrid, and bought the Incra 1000SE miter gauge through Amazon. I love it, in fact I loved it enough to also buy the Incra TS fence. It almost cost what my saw did,...
Thanks. It is pretty good sized: 19 x 12 inches, and when you consider that I lost an 1/8 of an inch with every cut of every strip, it used up a fair amount of wood . . . certainly not the most...
After getting alot of good advice from this board, I bought my first hand plane, a Record No. 5 jack plane with a LN replacement blade.
For its first real test, I used it to flatten and smooth...
A couple more pics that were supposed to be in the first response, too.

My wife and I got our new vise installed on our workbench. I played with my new handplane (a Record No. 5 jack plane with a Lie-Nielsen iron); and I made progress on my first cutting board, following...
Thanks, Brian. I should have taken another picture when all three racks came off, but alas, they all gone. Yum!

Good point, Brian. I'm pretty new to this, but I should have guessed. Anyway, here goes . . . pics of my new pane and vise . . . and a couple of my other passion, my Weber WSM smoker with the new...
Well, my "new" plane finally arrived this week (shipping from Canada to the US is slow). But, of course, I was busy and didn't get a chance to test it out until Saturday, when my wife and I were...
Spent most of Saturday retrofitting an old Weber grill. Also I finally got around to installing the new Lee Valley tail vise on the work bench. The best part was get to take a few swipes at the...
You ain't kidding. Wow, that's a haul!
Bill
Thanks, Scott. I figured this had been discussed previously, but my pathetic search skills didn't bear any fruit.

Any advice on where to buy lumber in MN other than the home stores and/or Rockler. Looking for a smaller mill in or near the Twin Cities. St. Paul or suburbs preferred.
Thanks,
Bill
Thanks for all the great ideas. I decided to dive in and get started, using a middle of the road option. I just couldn't justify spending the $$ on a new LN or LV plane when I didn't know if I...
I have seen many recommendations for using Johnson's Paste Wax for protecting your table saw's cast iron. Looking around my house I don't have any, but I do have Briwax. Is this essentially the...
What am I going to use the plane for? Hmmm, isn't that the question. . . I'm exposed already!! Well, I do not have a planer, and I do buy my stock already surfaced, usually S3, so . . .
I am...
As a relatively new woodworker (making simple furniture), I'm looking to add to my tool collection with some hand planes, but I'm having trouble deciding how to spend my money. I would like to keep...
Thanks, Rod. That's something I never would have thought of . . . BTW, why doesn't plywood have the same issues? Yes, I'm a real newbie. LOL
