Great project! I would probably nail with a good reproduction nail, such as tremont.
Are you currently building one? Would love to see progress pics.

I have had some good luck with Hewins Sawmill in Wathena, KS (just over the river from St. Joseph MO). They sometimes have some great buys, including some large slabs. Nice folks also.

Beautiful. I remember discussing this chest with you a few years ago. Congrats on getting it done! CH
Elegant design, love the federal inlay and veneer. Great workmanship. Really well done Roger!

Beautiful work Dave as usual. Great materials and finish. I am always amazed at your productivity. Cal
Robert,
The drawer fronts were resawn from the same crotch of the fall board, which is solid. I had the pleasure to visit Irion a few years ago and Myron showed me this set of crotches and I knew...
Eric,
Good catch. They do stand out, and moreso on this piece than typical, due to the large chunks that are the same size as the outer portion of the foot. Since this was a reproduction of a...
Thanks all for the nice comments....
Scott,
We each build a separate piece. So in 2009 there were actually 5 of these going on at one time (Dad, me, two brothers, and one good family friend)....
Great project! I am a big fan of this type of chest, and you did a great job. And I love all the Peter Follansbee information from his blog, very valuable.
I hope this is cherised by your son...
All,
Some of you might know about our Hobbs tradition, meeting once a year to build furniture together with my brothers, my Dad, and me. In 2010, our project was this desk. It has been a long...
Really elegant John. Beautiful form and nicely executed.
Couple of questions: You used metal slides, care to expound on what you chose and how they worked out?
Also, where did you source...
Gordon,
The classes are in Hertford, NC, which is about 60 miles inland from the Outer Banks (beach) and 60 miles south of Norfolk, VA. Closest airports are Norfolk and Raleigh-Durham (about 2.4...
Dave has it right. All of the examples were mortise and tenoned. And most were veneered as in the picture. Generally the offcut for the serpentine rail was used as the veneer to keep consistency...
All,
I thought maybe some of you would be interested in hearing about our Gateway Chapter SAPFM meeting that was held a couple of weeks ago. There were several names there that have been seen on...
Barry,
This table was built by my brother, Matt Hobbs, who does incredible work, by the way.
He did a "play by play" on the Thomas MacDonald forum. Linked here:...
Thanks guys for the comments and especially for recognizing my Dad for the award. Enjoyed meeting you as well Dave, and hope to see you next year.
For those out there who carve, what are some...
Well, I have not posted very much on SMC, much less any finished projects. The truth is the finished projects have been few and far between.....
But, I recently had some nice pictures taken of a...
Couple of my favorites for a start:
Queen Anne Furniture, by Vandal previously mentioned, excellent book, includes lots of really nice plans (no coffee tables).
Furniture Treasury, Nutting,...
Overland Park.
Inspiring work Joel. Your finish turned out really well also. Chair has a really good "period" look to it. You keep raising the bar, my friend. Cal
Nice work Roy. Your daughter's school is blessed to have you do all the work you do for them. I like the finish. Cal
Mark,
Incredible work, and I spent too much time on your blog as well. Great step by step. I love to see the old traditional carving art being performed. Are you familiar with Boris Khechoyan...
Nice work, beautiful chest. I love the Newport block and shell furniture, I would like to build a kneehole desk one of these days. And there is much of this Newport furniture in museums that is...
Thomas,
There are lots of sources out there, can you give more detail of the type of high chest you would like to build?
There are a couple of really nice plans in "Queen Anne Furniture" by...
Lou,
Great secretary, always great to see your work. Stunning use of tiger maple. What's up next? Cal
