I prefer unfinished. Over time it'll become polished and worn in by my hands and the patina-ed look of well used tools just appeals to me for whatever reason.
Have had one for years (HF) and while I don't typically like any of their tools, the saw sharpener has been great with no regrets
Yeah, that line you quoted was a bit puzzling to me also. On a small spindle using a screw or the like would not be terribly safe but do any large end-grain hollowing and you'll find that a faceplate...
I dye around 200 pieces a year although poplar isn't one of my go-to species. Transtint is my dye of choice.
The carrier I use (water or alcohol) depends on the size and/or method of application.

I agree with Steve. Those marks are from your gouge. Grinding the heel off your gouge can help mitigate them, use of a "bottom feeder" gouge may make a difference in that transition area. That...
Hi Jeff,
You talking something like the Rousseau or the Fast Cap? I've got the Rousseau for my miter saw and love it. Was wondering about something like that for my midi lathe that I use in a...
Mike is Right. Drill press (soft rather than firm pads) and start with a coarse enough grit to get rid of the old finish (abranet discs are your friend as they can be rinsed with water or mineral...
I ground all of my DC's as, if nothing else it prevents painful shocks which I've received from ungrounded lines. I've personally had a dust explosion in a DC but it was from a spark from the motor...
My back received a gift in the guise of a tailgate lift to help lift logs into the back of the truck. Fits in the tow receiver and has a hand winch and will pivot allowing me to roll logs onto it's...
5 pages long so may have missed someone else mentioning this but I've run into an issue like this that was caused when going from my DVR XP to a 3520b. The spindle of the PM is a hair longer than on...
Jim, not sure if it's in your price range but I swear by the JSP PowerCap http://www.toolpost.co.uk/pages/Health___Safety/Respirators/respirators.html
Not sold in US but they will ship. Just did a...
That's gorgeous! Love the detail and separation of the colors. Method?

I sand almost exclusively on the drill press using 3" Abranet or Klingspore Gold H&L disks. I find that it's quicker, eliminates those pesky lines that sanding on the lathe gives and it's far easier...
May be a repost, forum software doesn't aggree with my tablet...
Avery makes a 1.5" (ish) square REMOVABLE label that comes in a sheet and can be used with any ink jet printer. Removes without...
You know you're a woodturner when you've got plastic laminated business cards that you tack to cut trees in people's yards telling them to call you if they'd like a turned piece in exchange for a few...
Here's what I give with various turned items. I print it onto card stock and cut it into three different sets of instructions. A quick search of the interwebs will show where I got some of the...
Jake,
I generally pre-drill pilot holes in wood that's prone to cracking (or very wet wood) so that my stainless screws dont' put too much stress into the blank. When I do this I find that I...
I have little index cards that go with each bowl or vase with care and feeding instructions depending on it's intended purpose. Cleaning and care on all, recommended uses on utility bowls, etc.
I played with chucks vs faceplate quite a bit and I have to say that the faceplate is by far the best method of holding a large hollowform. (or medium size for that matter)
I'm a huge chuck...
I use a homemade version of the Jameison system. Requires rudimentary welding skills (mine equate to that of an inept monkey and were sufficient) and about $60.00 in parts including laser. Works as...
Hi Scott,
I've just put together a vacuum system (although I'm using a cheap HF pump) and can pull 25+ with it. I wanted to enclose mine to keep choking it with dust and to minimize the slight oil...
The shavings are put around all my trees and plants in the yard. (Not against the house for the afore mentioned reasons). They break down a bit quicker than pine bark mulch so I can keep all the beds...
Nice job John!
I like the elevated ribs. Is that dark "rim" one piece?
I'd imagine lifting the ribs to insert that rim would be a bit nerve wracking lol.
If this is the first one I'd be...
Set screw? Must be a new design. My XP is solid one piece. Do you have photos?
