I'll go one step further, if it wasn't for people buying cheap imports, I wouldn't be getting their older quality American made tools for pennies on the dollar.

When were you young? retail price in 1984 with a 3hp motor was 1580--3272 in todays dollars! In 1939 the price is listed at 180, with no motor, that's 2800 in todays dollars!
They are nice little planers, odd that someone would paint the cutterhead, but oh well. There is a ton of info on both owwm.org and vintagemachinery.org.

Take the first set off, I would imagine they haven't had much use, right? Since they weren't glued on, you should be able to re-sell them to someone who can use those tires, and then go buy the...
You don't need a million dollars, only 20,000!
I believe TECO is made by Westinghouse, which is not a fly-by-night company. I have one, and like it, but I haven't had it for 5 years so I have no idea how long it will last. I will say they are...
Wrong, they have 3hp rated single phase input vfd's for under 200, check dealerselectric if you don't believe me. IIRC if you have a 5hp motor, you need to go to a larger size and de-rate, but that's...
Boy, how much are you really saving by making a static converter. A new VFD could be had for around 180 bucks, shouldn't damage the motor, and give you the rated power, and that's not even checking...
The way it works is, you go buy one for 1500, and when you get home another one will show up for 200. That's how it happens for me anyways.

Shouldn't you be looking for one of these?http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac100/fishman76_2010/1b796c16.jpg
I have a 16" W-T too, and it is a stout saw. I assume the 14" is comparable. The...
If you guys can't even wait until you *have* the tool to brag about it, I'm gonna start bragging every time I look in a catalog! I'm gonna call it the preliminary really early gloat. =P
Cool that you unearthed this thread. So it's been 3 1/2 years, how has it held up?

I still haven't seen it!!
Another good thing about a quality used lathe is that you can hardly lose money on them. Case in point, my first lathe was a delta 1460, bought it for 200, used it till I wanted to upgrade, and then...
Ha! Hopefully you know I'm kidding. I was reading your post over on OWWM, and I figured I'd have some fun. I think you'll like the Oliver. I love mine! (thread hijack over)

Man, for 300 bucks you could have gotten one of these and saved yourself some aggravation.

Looks like a quick-release Wilton woodworking vise to me :) It's probably used to hold wood.
Ha! I hope you mean snifter! I was expecting to see something used to smell old people!
Thanks guys, the staved idea would save me some wood!

I cut and ground it to make it a tight fit, then glopped (technical term) some epoxy around it.

This was a fun little project. I'm pretty new to turning, and other than a bunch of bottle stoppers over Christmas, my first real project. I made a bunch of mistakes, but I have to call it done. My...
Ok, I was worried you just went from a 1725 rpm to a 3450rpm. 3410 to 3450 is probably just a variation in how the horsepower of a two-pole motor (3600 rpm) is listed (just a guess). And it would...
What do you mean by "the motor runs a little faster" usually motors run at 1140, 1725, or 3450. I noticed a big improvement in power transmission when I switched to double groove pulleys, and that...
Looks a little short!
I don't think he's gonna re-paint it
