Brian,
Since you are now in charge, start a new tradition by taking a portion of your next meeting to set the demo agenda for 2011. You know who the skilled people are in your club, so ask them...
Fred,
When you received your vacuum hub there should have been an O-ring in the bottom of the groove. Your posting seems to indicate that the O-ring might be missing or perhaps damaged. Also, if...
Ray,
You might take a look at the appropriate documents found here - http://jtturningtools.com/install-instructions The ones on system configuration and hardware kit installation should help.

Ray and Thom,
Leaky bowls can be dealt with. If you have this problem, it will always be through the end grain (or the worm holes). This is why God and 3M gave us blue tape. A few strips over...
Bob,
Take a look at a simple system diagram available here - http://jtturningtools.com/files/Installation%20Guidelines%20and%20Example%20System%20Diagram.pdf
It may help you get set up. Let me...
I really have to recommend that you strongly consider some alternatives in new lathes, particularly the Jet 1642 1.5hp version. I seriously doubt that you can acquire and update the old PM for a...
Jim - I have both the 5/8 V and the 1/2 V profiles. I would say that you could benefit from both, but given your criteria, if I could only have one it would be the 1/2" V. It is just more nimble...
If the budget is there for the 2HP version and you have 220 in the shop, I would say go for the extra power. I'm very happy with my 1642-2hp, and I think it does make a difference with larger size...
Nick,
I would recommend that you consider using a Steb-type center at the headstock - either a Morse taper style or chuck style is fine, but you might find more room to work with the slimmer Morse...
Agree with Steve and Bob - I might lean toward blue painters tape - plenty of friction, but easy to release. Sounds like a few thousandths of tape will easily firm up that grip.
On this lathe, if you want to use the knock-out bar you have to remove the hand wheel - and no, there is not room to drill it out. I think a lot of people remove the hand wheel and then misplace it...
Charles- this is a nice looking bowl and the curly maple is beautiful. Keep working - you have a great start.
With this type of shape, it is really difficult to make the transition from the...
Hard to imagine why they would discontinue the 2-hp model - it is simply installing a different motor and controller as everything else is the same.
Congrats steve. I have one of these too - you'll have to show me how to use it. Nice handle!
If you want to do some decoration and "art", you will need more than the minimal size units. I have the Optima Dual and have been pleased with it. Very nice pens - good quality system.
Hey Leo - I think I see a one-eyed alligator looking back from that bowl!
Really nice use of "junk" wood.
Amboyna burl - maybe? Post it again after it has finish on it.
You can get these types of items at www.mscdirect.com
If you are not in a hurry, watch their sales - new ones almost every day.
Very nice - would you provide a tutorial?

Two year owner of 1642-2hp. Very happy with it, and it was about $200 more that 1.5 at the time. You can never have too much power - mine is almost impossible to stall, even in "high" pulley range....
Paul,
I got 2 nuts from Fastenal - about $7.00 each if I remember correctly. Be careful trying to use these. Structural steel nuts are not made to any where near the tolerances that you are used...
The Barracuda chucks that I have used are very much inferior to similar sized chucks from Oneway, Vicmarc, and Nova. Consider the value of reliably holding your projects, and potential safety risks...
I'd say get the 2hp version of the 1642. You will have more versatility and power, and this will probably result in the lathe being satisfactory for you for a longer time. Unless you consistently...
