It's not totally hijacking because it leads back to the question, Can one learn and improve his/her turning skills and 'eye' for design if all they get are 'Attaboys'?

How many and what size post to hold the beams up?
4x4's......I'd use 9 total, equally spaced 4' on 8' sides, 3.5'...
Best bet is to dig holes 18-20" deep (below the frostline) and cement the posts in. Guarantee it won't move. When I bought my house 18 years ago I put in a pool and built a freestanding deck...

So does the colored closed cell foam sheets they sell at WallyWorld. I use the self stick ones. Think it's in the kids art aisle.

I apologize for my comment. I did not intend it to be seen as you're looking for freebee's, just that you should be able to do whatever you'd like with the mallets sent. I'm not very PC...

Since I don't do Neander I don't know, but, I figure you need different mallets (Size, weight, hardness, etc...) for different...

Recieved a piece of Mesquite crotch wood from Ernie Nyvall (who I met in person this Spring....Nice guy, a bit nuts, but nice. ;) :D ).
It's 11"x1"x1/4" thick. First time burning, but I like it....
Dunno what it is....but I like it.
7"x4"x1/4"thick...1 coat Minwax Antique Oil. Left a 1/16" foot to raise it up a lil' bit.
