I have a Harbor Freight mini mill that has been performing well after some tuning. I was thinking of setting it up for CNC capability. My first thought was CNC Fusion www.cncfusion.com, but they...
I have been using ViaCadPro for Mac and I like it a lot. Buy direct from their web site, and not the App Store. If you sign up for their newsletter, they will send a 25% off coupon.

I was looking at the planes in my local Woodcraft store, and first impressions were positive. However, the block plane appears to be a standard angle, and not a low angle 60 1/2 equivalent. Can you...
What are the better options?
I have an almost full bottle of HUT Crystal Coat that I have been using to finish pens. Just noticed that it had a "best used by" date of October 2006. How long will it actually last? What happens...
Thanks for all the responses. I did speak to Bosch, and they were unable to come up with any reason for the saw's behavior. So I took a dial indicator to the blade, and discovered that it was NOT...
Thanks, Dave. Tried that, with no change in results. After more experimenting this morning, it appears that the head is able to move side to side slightly, due to a very small amount of play in the...
I am having fits trying to get my Bosch 12" miter saw (3912) adjusted. When I adjust the fence to square it to the blade, the actual cut is not square. I can adjust the fence to be "out of square"...
I love them. I sort of, er, "collect", no, I USE them. Fine planes. Here is the definitive site for all things MF:

Not sure if this is appropriate to cross-post here, but I do have some Norton waterstones for sale listed in the classifieds forum, for those that don't make it over there!

Thanks for all the input. I am going to try just putting a 2 x 8 under the lathe. I will make holes in the 2 x that match the existing lathe mounting holes so I can run bolts through the lathe, 2...
I have a Rikon mini lathe, and recently purchased the bed extension for it to be able to turn some longer center work. Problem is this - my existing lathe table isn't quite long enough for the lathe...
Lacquer thinner. I usually soak a paper towel with it, and lightly buff it off. Some thicker coatings may require a little soak of the chisel in the lacquer thinner.

Any advice on turning a conductor's baton? My son would like to make one for his band teacher. I have read a little on the topic, but have never tried turning anything long and thin on the lathe....
I will add the belt sander recommendation. A while ago I picked up a 2 x 42" belt/disc sander from Sears. It is fabulous! Much less heat generated during grinding. Since then, my grinders hardly...
I can't seem to get the point out of the center. The lathe came with a small tommy bar for that, but it wasn't explained anywhere in the instructions, and my feeble attempts to use it didn't seem to...
Finally got a Rikon lathe, after looking at many other brands of mini-lathes. My decision was helped by some of the comments here on SMC, and so far I am thrilled! A few minor glitches with fit and...
Thanks for the responses. Ken, my username request is in, and should be updated soon. As for the chuck, the kind folks at Woodcraft allowed me to exchange my 3/4 x 16 model in for the 1 x 8 model!...
Well, I finally went and bought a new lathe - the Rikon midi. That's a lot of lathe! A few minor glitches/rough edges, but overall I am pleased with the quality.
I currently have a Nova...
The best advice I would give is to tell you to take the Guidice book with a grain of salt. He has some good info in there, but some is very strongly opinionated, and not necessarily correct, i.e....
Doug,
You initially talked about the blade being un-heat-treated D2, but then said you were going to test A2. What blade comes with the kit? Does it need to be heat-treated by the kit builder?

Pam,
I'm curious about the differences in Japanese plane design. What are some of the differences in Japanese vs. western designed planes that make them work so much differently? I have seen...
Does anyone use the Lee Valley house brand chisels? I'm curious to see how they perform. I've been looking at mid/low price range chisels, to find a good price/performace ratio. May eventually...
