Dale, it turned out beautifully! Well done. LOML is also a big scrapper and I'm going to show her the photos.... it would be fun to build her something like that because I know she'd love it. ...
Larry, I love that crown molding and beading at the top...gorgeous....makes a very elegant looking piece! Well done
Eric
Dennis, thanks for asking the question....I'd wondered the same thing and never stopped to think about the blade width versus sole width as creating a built-in reference. I love learning something...
You want to be sure that your top does not have exposed screws...they don't mix well with sharp tools (that you want to keep sharp!). You might consider beefing up the top with a 3/4" mdf piece...
you might try dampening the board prior to running it through...sometimes that helps. skewing the board, if possible, and/or taking smaller cuts can help, too, sometimes
and if that doesn't...
but if I didn't I couldn't fit two people into the shop! LOL! :)
Tyler, just give me a shout and I'll even try to do some cleaning first :)
great looking shop, Jerry!
I had good weekend with lots of shop time, too.
started cutting the dovetails for a tool cabinet case and then began work on a corner cabinet I am making for a friend at work. Got the top and...
The spline is more for allowing the top (when using a solid top) to move since the end cap won't move much along its length. In my situation, with a top of mdf and hardboard, I really don't have...
On mine the dovetails are glued to the end caps. The end caps at affixed by using a slot and a spline with carriage bolts through the end cap and into the top.
(If the pictures attach) ;) you can...
I originally started by chopping all the waste, then switched to the coping saw method. I think you will like the results. As mentioned above, this process puts less pressure on the chisel blade so...
Why do I keep doing this to myself? Why? Why? Why? I know what will happen and still I open up the message....... :(
and Ben is absolutely right, they are GD beautiful! :)

It is so much fun when they come out and spend time with you doing something you enjoy. Let's hope he remains interested so you can have many more wonderful days like this one!

I finally built a crosscut sled that I'd been planning to build for months. Tested it out and it worked great! Picked up some QS red oak and set it in the shop to acclimate - going to be used for a...
Good to hear you discovered what the problem was...it can be frustrating! You will discover that a good straightedge, a square, and winding sticks are critical to hand planing boards into usable...
Jason, that is gorgeous! A very well executed design.

a nice balmy -23 this morning (-44 windchill) with a project -8 for a high today. Tomorrow, snow and maybe above zero! :) Sat will be devoted to my son's basketball, but Sunday I should get some...
I have one of the ECE Primus smoothers (along with several Stanleys) and love it, but it is bedded at a slightly higher (50 deg) angle than the Stanleys, which can be good in many situations. The...
I do as Michael does, get it set and crank it pretty good with a screwdriver...occasionally I will test it and re-tighten if needed.
FWIW, a big help is to create a set of guides for setting your...
Thanks for the link, Mike. I enjoyed it! :)

10 yo son has a basketball tourny (again) and this time our club is hosting it - meaning we (parents) get to "volunteer" for concession stand, scorekeeping, and other duties, so shop time will be...
Cool, that may finally get me to get up the nerve to try building a plane. The metal work has worried me, but at that price I can learn and not worry so much about ruining it! :o
Eric
Welcome Gene! Nice site and furniture!
