Scraping Insert

Has any one tried the Veritas Scraping Plane insert from Lee Valley? I like the idea. I'd like to know how well it performs.

Yes, I have it installed in a #4. I find that it can work very well. At the time (about 2 years ago, I posted my findings on Knots, which were in response to the majority of folk who seemed to think it was useless. I would rather use a plain card scraper for most things, or a scraper plane, but having a spare #4 on hand dedicated to scraping is not a bad thing- nothing like variety in life you know.
I tested the two blades it came with , merely sharpening them as one would a card scraper. I also made a thicker blade from an old square blade and prefer the action of this blade to the L/V blades. I scraped Jatoba, Wenge and African Blackwood with it, amongst others. The burnishing tool you see is made from a roller bearing .

I may get the Lee Valley Tool. It won't be a real high use tool, unless I absolutely love it. I think it is very reasonably priced and I have had good luck with Lee Valley purchases. The Hamler tool may be better, but my guess is that it would be a lot more money. The Hamler Tool Blog hasn't been updated since August 2007. It has no price lists or order forms either. The insert isn't important enough to me for me to dig for information on it. Maybe someone else will benefit from the suggestion.
