    Pierced bowl

Here is a Black Locust bowl that I pierced today. I drilled a series of holes in 3 rings around the area to be pierced. They weren't enough and additional holes were drilled with the burr that I was using. It went pretty well. Just one oops where the burr drifted into an adjacent area. You can probably find it in the picture.
It has just one coat of still wet natural Danish Oil.

Any tips on getting the oil on the edges of the piercing? It's rather messy trying to do it with a rag or brush.

Any other comments or critiques are welcome.

Very nice work Ken! About the only thing I can think of to get oil on all the edges would be to dip/submerge the bowl into the oil. That would get everything covered but doubt it would be any less messy than a foam brush!

The bowl is a beauty. I really like that pierced rim. The one I did I just used a foam brush and soaked it. No more of a mess than dipping.

    Piercing

    Jim,
I used my Dremel with the flex shaft and a 1/8" carbide burr. It was done in 3 sittings and took a total of about 2 hours.

Ken I used to do a lot of fretwork on the scrollsaw. I used to just dip the piece in oil. Then just wipe off what you can. I always use the compressor and blow out all the oil from all the little nooks and crannies. You may have to wipe the oil off a couple times.

    Very nice.

Did you have a pattern for the piercing or did you do it on the fly?

That looks amazing! After doing a couple of piercings with just a Dremel, I picked up the flex shaft to make it easier. You've inspired me to get all of my pens done and break it out and give it a try. Nice job!

That is very cool Ken! How thick was the rim where you did the piercing?
