Most of the contractors around here are using those nail cap thingies.

    Cap nails. Just remembered.

Boschstich makes a gun for them now.

It depends on how long the Tyvek or felt will be exposed to the elements. When we tar paper our HFH houses we use cap nails because they will keep the paper down. If you are going down with the shingles right after you put the tar paper down then a hammer stapler from your local tool store with 1/4 or 1/2 inch staples work just fine. The same holds true for Tyvek. I just sealed up our unibuilt house that was delivered 2 weeks ago and I used cap nails to hold it down.

Rent one of the staple guns that use the caps or buy one and ebay it when you are done. The caps spread out the holding force and are less likely to just tear out if you get some wind. I think we used 1 1/2 inch staples with it. They work really slick.

I used 1/2" staples on the Tyvek. Just wanted to hold it down while I put the siding on. Shingles would be best to use the cap nails. I actually used roofing nails when I redid the part of the shop last Spring. But I put the shingles on the same day. Will probably do the same thing in a couple weeks when I do the next and hopefully last section of roof. Jim.
