    Help viewing new posts.

I might be missing the obvious (won't be the first time), but I can not distinguish between new threads and threads I have already seen, but with new messages. Is there an option I should use?

    Not Sure What

I am not exactly sure what you are asking, but I will give it a shot

distinguish between new threads and threads I have already seen, but with new messages.

The envelope icons are the key to new messages in a thread which you have not yet read. They also tell you what threads you have responded to.

<IMG src="http://www.klsal.com/folder.gif"> = A thread which you previously have read & has no new messages
<IMG src="http://www.klsal.com/dot_hotfolder.gif"> = A thread which you have previously responded to but has no new messages.
    <IMG src="http://www.klsal.com/newfolder.gif"> = A thread with new message(s) you have not read.
<IMG src="http://www.klsal.com/dot_newfolder.gif"> = A thread which you have previously responded to that has message(s) which you have not read
<IMG src="http://www.klsal.com/newhotfolder.gif"> = A thread containing more than 15 replies or more than 150 views which has message(s) you have not read
<IMG src="http://www.klsal.com/dot_newhotfolder.gif"> = A thread containing more than 15 replies or more than 150 views which you have previously responded to and has unread message(s).

    Note:

After reviewing the threads and messages you are interested in, then you must "mark all forums read" on either the Forum Home Page or the View New Posts Page so the envelope icon status is updated for your next review or next visit.

I hope this is the explanation you were looking for.

    Ken

Let me make an analogy to Badger Pond. When I read a post the color changed. The next day I could tell which thread I had already seen. Any new message was the original color. Its very difficult for me to distinguish the differences here especially since older active threads roll to the top. Plus my eyes are not that good anymore and at a glance the envelope symbols look alike. Is your example above what I am looking for?

Yes Terry --- basically you are looking for any "Open" envelope icons. This forum software automatically sends threads with new messages to the top of the board (indicating new activity). This keeps you from having to scroll all the way through several days of messages to see what is new. Just takes a little getting use to

I think I have the same problem Terry.

Hi everyone, I think I may have the same problem that Terry does. I will try to describe it in a different way. When I read thru the titles of the posts I look for the things that interest me. I read the original post and I may or may not be interested. If interested I will read the replies to the original post. If not interested I never want to read that original post again or any replies that come after my first reading. But the post will come back to the top of the list if someone replies at a latter date. I maybe fooled into relooking at the post only to realize that I already read it and am not interested. I don't care to do this. I like to see Ken's pens. But sometimes he posts numerous posts of pens and I don't know which I have already looked at and which I haven't. This happens because as soon as someone replies with a post that says "Great looking pens, Ken." the whole thread moves back to the top. I don't want to read the post "Great looking pens, Ken". I might have a solution to this problem. If the date could be put in with the title of each original post I would be able to identify it as one I have already read. I know the date is included with the most recent post but I don't see it with the original post except for when it is first written. Does this make sense. Oh well thats, thats the trouble I have. More suggestions

When you return to a thread you have previously read but has new messages, click on the down arrow <img src="http://www.sawmillcreek.org/images/firstnew.gif"> at the left of the thread title. That will take you to your first unread message. You will not have to see the post you already viewed.

Kind of handy to do it that way. Returning to the Badger Pond method of screening. A lot of threads that started out routine turned very interesting part way through. Hitting the down arrow <img src="http://www.sawmillcreek.org/images/firstnew.gif"> gets you to that intermediate place in the thread where that happens.

As I understand there are changes coming that will allow thread and sub-thread viewed which will alleviate the problem.

    I'm in the same boat

When I am at home (dial-up) I get a bit frustrated opening up a "new" thread, waiting for a picture to upload, and finding the "new" portion of it is a comment like "I agree completely". Not that I want to disparage those comments, but when my surfing time is limited, I wish that I could list things in order of the original thread. This would make it easier for me when I have 20 minutes to catch up on things.

One of the options is to sort by starter thread, but it doesn't seem to do what I want.

Comparing it to the pond (dangerous I know): I used threaded guestbook style. It gave all of the original threads in chronological oder and when opened, all of the replies were there in chronological order. After I opened a thread the color changed, but if a new response was added, the word new appeared next to the title. This way I could tell if I read all or any of each thread.

It would be a nice option for me, but I feel like I am complaining about the floor mats in a Rolls Royce, so if it doesn't happen, I'll continue to wipe my feet

    Thanks again

I have to agree with Peter. I've always used the same setup as Peter on BP and other forums and software. Sonja and I have been totally confused as to what we have looked at and what we haven't. When an old subject pops to the top because of the recent post, it also shows something I may not have read off the index page. If I leave the forum and come back, everything can be marked as read whether or not I actually read it. Yesterday I hit the Austrialian forums, which appear to use the same software as this forum. I read just a few posts, then went back last night. Everything was marked as read, even the forums I had not entered earlier. This makes for total confusion. I also don't see any reason to quote the previous message in a string, just the subject line should be enough.

Since I'm using a phone modem, all these icons and animation which have nothing to do with wood slow up the loading of my page. I also have a questions as to how many moderators are at this site? Also, didn't we take a vote to show that EMail addresses would be shown? How can we send anyone an image when the EMail address is hidden?

    Inquiring minds want to know....

    New Posts

This software tracks what posts you've read or not--
I suggest using the <a href="http://www.sawmillcreek.org/search.php?s=&action=getnew">View New Posts</a> feature, which will show you all threads that you haven't read. When you've finished browsing the subject titles for posts you want to read, simply click 'Mark all forums as read' at the bottom of the search. This link is also available on the main page.

As far as viewing a single post, the threaded listing (coming soon) will allow you to view a single post, rather than loading an entire thread to view them.

To send a member an email, simply click the <a href="http://www.sawmillcreek.org/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=111"><img src="./images/profile.gif" border=0></a> button at the bottom of their post. From that page, you can click the link entitled 'Send email to (Name Here)'.

    Hope this helps!

    Still not catching on

I am still not catching on to the problems here. Ted gave a good tip to help, but I don't understand why you are not seeing open envelopes on the threads where there are messages that you have not read. They will not clear as "read" unless you mark the forum "read" before you leave that forum or click "Mark All Forums Read" either on the Forum Home Page or the View New Posts page. If your computer is set up to accept cookies from this site, when you return, threads with unread messages should have open envelopes in the left hand columm.

If you click <IMG src="http://www.klsal.com/firstnew.gif"> on the left hand side of the listings that will take you to the first unread message in that thread. If you click <IMG src="http://www.klsal.com/lastpost.gif"> on the right hand side of the listings that will take you to the last post in that thread.

Take some time to visit the Tips pages on my website. Print them if you like and refer to them to help. The link to those tips is at the end of this message.

I can always tell what I have read and what I have not read. This software is far advanced from what everyone was use to on The Pond. It is much more versatile but takes some getting use to, just like anything new. Once you become proficient at it you would never want to go back to what you were use to on The Pond.

If you want to see a threaded text only listing click the "Text Only" button on the top of the forum page.

VBulletin 3.0 is even more powerful and versatile than this version. It is my understanding that Keith will be upgrading to that newer version when available which I believe is in a month or so.

Keep experimenting, read the tips pages and you will learn to love this software package as I have.

Ken is so right on that. This has much more potential. Think of it as a new tool. Play with it.
