Do they have a useful niche? I would think they would not work so well for traditional block plane chores, like flush trimming end grain.
The reason I ask is that I have been offered an ECE Emmerich block plane (50 deg), and the price may be right.

Higher angle block planes (my experience is with metal planes though) are useful for small smoothing tasks when you have to tame patches of interlinked grain. Especially when the situation dictates that you need to use one hand. They are also handy for relieving work edges, and small long grain chamfers.
I would recommend both a regular angle and low angle in any kit.
