    Smile homemade wipe on finish recipe

    when you make your own wipe on finish is it paint thinner or turpentine.or what do others like to use.thanks

    Most folks use mineral spirits AKA "paint thinner". You "could" use turps but the smell is something to avoid, IMHO. Typical wipe on finish would be a 50/50 mix of mineral spirits and your oil based varnish of choice.

    Paint thinner might contain other ingredients that could be more aggressive than you'd like in a varnish. I'd use mineral spirits or naphtha.

    I use turpentine. I hear some people ay they don't like the smell, but it doesn't bother me at all.
