    Smoothing burl

Have a piece of Honduran Rosewood burl that I want to smooth for table centerpiece under a bowl. Not willing to even attempt on jointer or planer, nor a smoothing plane, so...hand powersander or scraper. It is relatively flat and smooth, but does have some sawmarks from original cut that could be removed.
Regions might soft or quite hard, not due to degradation but drastic differences in the burl. What is the safest means to proceed. I am concerned aobut creating a divot or two by starting the wrong way.
