what type finish for wine barrel furniture

what type of finish should i use to finish the wine side of wine barrel furniture? i recently found a source for free used barrels and have alot of ideas for products but dont want the finished product to still smell like wine. thanks for any help

Shellac is a great sealer. And, over the red stain, the color will probably look pretty good if you use clear shellac.
