    Wainscoting question

    Hello,

I want to add a wainscoting effect to the walls in my dining room. I know that this usually means installing paneling (plywood or such) to the bottom 3 feet or so, then adding molding onto that.

In my case, I’d prefer not to install any paneling, but just install chair rail at about 32 inches from the floor, then install a series of “rectangles” each made of 4 pieces of mitered molding below that, and finally, a base molding at the bottom.

I have sheetrock walls, and they have a slight texture on them.

My question is, have any of you done this same thing, that is, create a sort of “fake” wainscoting, and do you see any problem with doing it over sheetrock walls that have a slight texture?

    Thanks,
    Louis

Been there, done that. Works fine. Just use caulk on the chair rail and mouldings. You can buy precut radiused corners, so your "frames" have that "someone took a bite out of them" look. Sometimes there are issues finding studs to nail into with the frames. You can use some construction adhesive to help.
