    Cell phone/ipod charging station?

I want to build a cell phone/ipod/gadget charging station out of some quartersawn red oak that I recently acquired.

Hoping to find something that looks like the desktop "valets" you see in all the gadget catalogs, etc. But instead of jewelry, I want it to hide a power strip and all the charger cords and transformers.

I've also never used quartersawn oak before, so I want something that highlights the rays a lot.

Anybody seen some plans they could point me to?

Check out David S. website/blog - Wood Whisperer
I followed his weekly work on a gadget station a few months back. He spent alot of time on the design and had a lot of good ideas on function, etc. But I think the end design was a wall mounted design.

Check it out: http://thewoodwhisperer.com/ the project is buried in the site.

    Wow! That's really great.

A little beyond my skill level (and personal tastes), though.

Also, I'd like to be able to lay the phones/ipods down on their backs because the charging "ports" are on the bottoms of some of the gadgets.

Thanks. Not at all what I have in mind, though.

Hey Ed. I just noticed the overall design seems similar to one I found in Wood Magazine. Is that where you got your inspiration?

I'm think I'm also going to build a modified version of the WOOD magazine one.

Do you find it's wide enough? I'd like to be able to put 2 iPods and 2 cell phones side-by-side on the vinyl pad. Was thinking I could put a power strip in the rear storage area (without the dividers there) and cover with a hinge top lid.
