    Finish for Oars

I have a set of old oars that I want to refinish. I believe they are ash. I use them infrequently, maybe half dozen times a year. My question is what type of finish should I use on them?

    Thanks for your help

Tom, any quality spar varnish will serve you well. Do not varnish the grip as bare wood is kinder to skin than varnish or paint.

Spar varnish would be typical, as it contains UV blockers and is a bit softer than other varnishes to allow for movement due to moisture.

You might consider just oiling the handgrips, but you may need to re-oil frequently to keep them waterproof.
