Where did SMC come from?

I was reading a thread where Keith mentioned that the rules of SMC grew out of Badger Pond. Googling Badger Pond took me to another ww forum. Is there any abridged history of these woodworking forums?

Once upon a time, before the internet, there was Compuserve. They had a Woodworking forum there. When Compuserve started to falter and the internet took off, some of the participants opened various forums of their own. Among them was Badger Pond.
Badger Pond, too, went by the wayside and some of the participants there opened SMC.
There were other forums with similar histories. In fact many of the older woodworking forums on the internet today can trace their roots back to Compuserve in one way or another.
