This is the box art from a Japanese model company. With a little cleanup it could probably be vectorized...

Yup your hitting it way too hard.. Use the photograv 'glass' setting, but reduce the picture to 150 dpi 'before' running it through photograv, but laser it at 300 (or a even multiple) If you have a universal that does not use 300 dpi, then run the photo at 100, and laser at 200 dpi I don't know what power laser you have, but a start of 80% power, and 40% speed should put you in the neighborhood.. always use 100% black for photographs not a percentage of black.. Use percentages for text and solid graphics only.. This works for me, and I put a lot of photos on glasses..

Epilog 24TT(somewhere between 35-45 watts), CorelX4, Photograv(the old one, it works!), HotStamping, Pantograph, Vulcanizer, PolymerPlatemaker, Sandblasting Cabinet, and a 30 year collection of Assorted 'Junque'

Experience is a wonderful thing.
It enables you to recognize a mistake when you make it again.

Phyllis,
You might try looking in Janes Fighting Ships. They have a number of line drawings that you might be able to use. Even though I worked just across the bay from where this actual ship was tied up, unfortunately I was not able to get a photo. Military security and all. Good luck. Oh, yes, in Janes, look under the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force, or JMSDF.

Phyllis,
Glad to help.
As a side bar, I note that you also live in California. Since returning to the states after living in Japan for 14 years, expanding my wood working business to include laser engraving, and joining SMC, I note that the majority of folks on this forum are East of the Sierra Nevada's. Have you also found this to be so?
I like to meet folks here in California within driving distance, for the specific purpose of visiting their places of business, exchanging ides and to see how others operate while asking for advice etc, without reinventing the wheel. Everyone on this forum has been extremely cooperative. Hopefully I haven't offended anyone by asking for help and advice in this manner.
Once I'm up and running I will gladly return the favor in any way possible.
Comments?

I am glad someone had finally mentioned Jane's. They are a world leader of military hardware, ships included. If someone is looking for military images and can't find it, Jane's is a great place to turn.

I went to Jane's yesterday and if i'm not mistaken in order to view any photos you have to join, with a fee??
Phyllis
Phyllis,
if you are trying to "get there" on line, then yes, you'll have to join etc. I'm sure there is a local library in your neck of the woods. You can find "Jane's Fighting Ships" either in the military section and or the reference section of the library. Also, if you are close to a Navy base, or any military base with a base library, you'll be able to find a hard copy of this same book there as well.
Hope this helps. Unfortunately I left "my copies" with the Navy when walking away after approximately 40 years of service in and out of uniform.

Thanks for the info Dave...i did a lot of googling today and was checking out blueprints...blueprints are more of a lineart...just hard finding Kashima 3508...
I did the glass today with the photo George fixed for me and because its not a lineart i lost a lot of detail...i will post the glass...George if you are reading this what do you think of the glass? The Glass on the left is the photo you fixed George, the one on the right my sister ran thru photograv.
Sorry for the glare, its not easy getting a nice picture of glasses with wording on both sides...
the photo Christopher posted my work....

Hi Phyllis;
Tough to see detail in pic- it's very difficult to get a good pic of something like this unless you're a photo expert.
Unfortunately this is one of those things which has a lot of variables and requires a lot of trial and error-use cheap window glass and run different contrast/brightness settings on the pic and different power settings on the laser. Offhand, it looks as if you may be using too much power or the image is too dark.
One other thing. If you find lineart of a similar ship, its real easy to change the vessel number to what you need.
Best regards;
George

Hi George,
I'm searhing my heart out for a lineart ship...i have a 4 day weekend to do it in...
the boat i lighten up to about a 50% black...my settings were 20s / 80p / 400 dpi...maybe i will try and reduce the power down...
I really appreciate your hard work on the ship...i can use that one for other jobs for this customer...trust me your hard work will not go to waste...
