    mottling of varnish

I'm refinishing an outdoor porch, and laying down exterior-grade marine-quality varnish. On the second application there was considerable mottling in spots--the varnish gathered and wrinkled. Should I let it dry completely and then try to sand it? Still after 24 hours i tried this and it just got muddy.

I think the fact that the varnish was thick enough to wrinkle up would mean it needs an extra-long time before sanding.

Did you clean the deck before you applied the finish?

Thin coats anre much better than thick coats. When you apply a very thick coat the finish has trouble drying then it has even more trouble curing. Stays very soft or sticky forever.

Finishing is an 'Art & a Science'. Actually, it is a process. You must understand the properties and tendencies of the finish you are using. You must know the proper steps and techniques, then you must execute them properly.
