Help with a Hinge, Please !

I"m trying to make a box where the front part is hinged, the back part is glued down with a rear entry drawer.

The second pic is a plywood prototype that i'm using to experiement

The second picture shows the only way I have figured out how to do it so far. But I don't like the looks of it ! I haven't split/cut the "real" top yet.

The first pic is of how the hinge would look on the "real" top. But I don't think the top looks good like that with those hinges so prominent

So how in the heck am I going to get that top to open from the front ???
    I'm perplexed !!

    Thanks in advance

Barrels were also my first thought or depending on material thickness, back-to-backs.

Small barrel hinges break. I tried using them, and literally threw out the bag when 3 of the first 4 I tried broke within 15 minutes of dry installation. Maybe larger ones are better, but I doubt it. The interior mechanism is so fragile that slight twists or even normal usage seem to unpin the hinge "fingers".

If the thickness is sufficient, Soss hinges are built far better (albeit expensive).

Hi Mark... looks like a neat little project.

Have you thought about maybe doing a box joint along the edges, and running a pin through it? That might not look as good either, but it would be different. You would have to chamfer it so it could open.

Or, you could use a knife hinge and mount it on the inside of the box and create a mortise for the hinge. Knife hinges are usually used to open horizontially, which is also an option - but there's no reason you couldn't use it to open vertically as well.

Those are my 5:44am, 1/2 cup of coffee thoughts.....
