Summary List of Member's Shop Characteristics

I decided to summarize the information contained in the "what the Size of your workshop?" thread (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=10114) in a table. I will update the table as additional posts are made to that thread or to this one. You can also send me a private note with corrections and information for the summary if that is easier.

A table containing the information (in descending order of area) appears in post #2 in this thread. It was last updated on the 28th of September, 2004.

I have already had one benefit from constructing this list. I was able to show Margaret (my wife) that the shop she considers to be very very big is in the lower portion of the list that is ordered by size.

    Frank,

A couple tricks I learned when posting tables:

    (1) Use the preview button to see how things will look
    (2) Elimnate all spaces and lines...cram everything together so it is almost impossible to see anything and edit it
    (3) Keep a separate file of all the html coding in Notepad or Wordpad and use cut and paste
    (4) Keep playing with the preview to find other little nuances.
    (5) Also, when you edit the original post, you won't find your html commands, just the table itself...replace it with your saved file in (3) because if you directly edit it, it will be moved down in spacing.

The reason you have problems with tables is that you are posting under another html command (I forget the name of it) and it messes up the spacings so you need to elimnate all the lines or many of them.

Doing that Bessey GB thing was quite challenging. You might just post an Excel spreadsheet if you don't want to deal with it.

    ascending order of surname

I have decided not to maintain this version of the table any longer.

It's there. I expect that you did not look down far enough. There is a lot of empty space before the table that I can't figure out how to get rid of. Any help from HTML experts would be appreciated.

You can add that my shop is also a separate outbuilding, although fomerly a 3 1/2 car garage. (Building is 21' x 44' total) It has an unfinished upper floor, if that is relevant.

WOW, I never thought our shop would be nearly the smallest

Thank for the chart. When we setup our shop for filming the magazine, we found that the typical shop (at the time of our surveys) was about 10 x20. I can see that by the posters here, the typical (or average) shop is much larger. Perhaps it is time for us to re-do our studio to closer reflect that of home shops and make it BIGGER!

My shop is 32' X 50' w/ catherdral ceiling. Max height 13'6". It is a seperate bldg and also has 12' X 50' lumber storage.

Thanks for putting this together the info is very interesting.
    Enjoy the journey,

    Martin

Chris, I'm not sure that the "average" shop is a lot bigger. Remember, that the sampling that Frank is working from is a) not scientifically/statistically valid and b) there are a number of "pros" and more-than-serious woodworkers represented on the list. I think that your "one car garage" setup is probably more in line with the true majority of hobbyist woodworking setups, even in the total SMC membership community which is currently thousands of people, rather than the few dozen that responded to the original thread as well as additions in this one. What you might consider doing is adding considerations to the projects, such as, "If you have a shop larger than our typical one-car garage area, you can (do something a different way)..."

Thanks for compiling this Frank, that's a lot of work.

I'm not surprised to find my basement shop would be near the bottom - 15' x 18' with a 4' x 6' cedar closet notched out of one corner - roughly 250 sqft. It works for me - hopefully - if I get to building it, a play room will stand next to it so I can entice the little man into the shop and building things at an early age.
