    What's a good price for a 20" Planer?

I found a Grizzly 20" planer on CL for 850, it is a G1033. I see that theydon't sell it anymore only the G1033X which is the extreme model with spiral head cutter. This one is a four blade model and is supposed to be in great shape and comes with a extra set of new blades. Is it a good deal? The closest one to it is for 1500 new.

To me personally. 850 is too close to $1500. Wouldnt take too many problems to run up the other $650.

I've run a 20" Yorkcraft (no longer sold as Wilke Machinery is defunct) for 3 years and run it hard. It is idenical to the Grizzly you mention. I have had no problems with it and don't anticipate any. The extra set of new knives is worth $100 as I just purchased a set from Holbrens.

Run a piece of wood through is and look at the cut would be a simple way of determining if knives are out of kilter... feed roller problems.. gearbox..e etc. problems. I think $850 is fair if the machine has not been extensively used and abused and if this is a hobbiest in lieu of a shop.... I doubt it seriously as most hobbiest don't use them that often.

I always consider the starting point price of used tools to be about 1/2 the cost of new, and I'll go up or down depending on an infinite number of variables. Sounds to me like that one is pretty close, I'd consider it at least worth looking over.

Agreed, the price looks reasonable if it's in serviceable condition......Rod.

    I have the G1033.

Its been a good planer. Bought in 1998 or so.

New price then was $1195.00 if I remember right.

Decent price, but with the shipping cost I wouldn't do it unless I could pick it up.

I would definitely check it out. It seems like it is a fair starting point. If the planer is in good condition, it might be worthwhile.

Plus, you can always try and talk him down.

I recently paid $400 for one that looks just like the G5850. I couldnt find a model number on it and it's about 10 years or so old. It just needs to have the blades sharpened but it still cuts pretty good with the dull blades.
