    Question Setting jointer knives.....

.... How far should the knives stick out the cutter head on a 6" jointer?

    Thanks
    Brian

There isn't a specific height, but one that gives you a little adjustment each way is a good idea. What's most important is that they are all at exactly the same exposure and that the outfeed table is then adjusted up or down to match the height of the knives. These two things are critical.

    Thanks Jim!

If i understand correctly, the knife locking bar is supposed to act as a chip-breaker which to my mind means they should be fairly close to the edge of the knife. Mine are ~.180 below the edge but the chamfer of the blade ends a bit above the cutter head.

Maybe i should find something better to worry about...
