    Hummingbird Box Commission

    Hi Everyone
Got a call from a client in California yesterday that saw my website and asked if I could do a hummingbird box for him to give to his wife for her birthday which is next week. I said that I do commission work but usually require at least 30 days notice. He said that he would be willing to pay a little extra if I could get it done.Well who am I to argue with making a bit more money so I took on the job. It is one of my standard patterns /kits which did make it easy to do although I haven’t done this pattern in a year or so. Here is the finished box which I did today-minus the hinges, the lining and another coat of finish.
The box is mahogany with maple inlays. The top is made with bookmatched mahogany, bookmatched birdseye maple, ebony (beak, feet and triangles), (tulipwood (flowerpetals),bloodwood (throat), pau-amerillo(center of flower) and different shades of green poplar(bird and leaves). Box is 5”x 6” x 3”

That tulipwood is beautiful. How difficult is it to obtain?
    Very nice work!.

    Hi Dan
I get alot of my exotics from Wall lumber in NC. Tulipwood runs about $25 bf but is getting harder to find anything over 2-3" wide.

Well, I guess for a project that good looking, it evens out. I couldn't see those projects on the give-away list though, unless it's for the missus or significant other.

I like it very much. Could you show us a bit about how you make it?

    Hi Ken
I am presently doing a WIP blog on a couple of the other forums that show the steps to make my newest commission. It is a keepsake box for a customer in NC who owns a buffalo ranch and wants some custom boxes for auctions that he will attend. If anyone would like me to do the blogs on this forum I would be happy to. It describes the milling of the stock , the box glue-up , the pattern design and the Intarsia inlay steps. Just let me know if you are interested.

Mike, another wonderful piece of art!! You do such great work, with such precision. They just seem to have the perfect combination of woods and grain patterns, coupled with a pleasing design.

Ken W., Shelley would appreciate one of these for Christmas!! You have time!

I want to learn!!! VERY interested!
Wood is very beautiful in tree form. Wood is very useful in burning form. I merely try to make my work honor the first, avoid the latter, and aim for the middle: beautiful and useful.

    Mike,
    Nothing short of beautiful.
In fact I am a loss for words to properly describe such a fine box.
What type of lining do you plan to use?
And would you please post another photograph of this when you are finished?
I too would be interested in your process.
