    I know it's a PITA, but I don't know of anything that works like Naval Jelly. Like most things, the more you use it the easier it gets.

    Search the web for "electrolysis rust removal". I'm doing a vintage Delta lathe compund slide right now and I've done parts as big as a Unisaw table.

    Naval jelly works well, but you have to get it all off while it's still wet. If you don't, rewetting with more naval jelly helps to soften it up so you can get it off.
