Thread: JDS A/C Hepa filter retrofit

    JDS A/C Hepa filter retrofit

I have a 10 year old JDS 750 Air Cleaner unit which has worked flawlessly and I'm in the process of moving it to a higher/better location in my shop. Before doing so, I though I'd check around if there was a Hepa filter I can retrofit to front of unit. Filter size is 12"x24"x1". I currently use the electrostatic slide in unit although feel too much is getting past and into secondary filter. I would like to bump the current 90% filtration factor up to Hepa levels. Any ideas or experience on this application?

    Thanks,
    Mac

If you have what I have, it is:

    http://jdstools.com/air-tech750-er.aspx

    It has a 12" x 24" inlet/outlet.

I put one of these on the outlet side:

    http://www.amazon.com/AllergyZone-AZ...4298809&sr=1-2

It is not perfect because it is "taped" on the outlet somehow but, for $20, hard for me to beat it.

I am going to look around again and see if I can find a 12" x 24" HEPA furnace filter.

Glad I am not the only one looking. Maybe JDS will take note.

    Mark,
    Thanks for the reply,
I have the older USA made 750 unit w/o remote. Seems like there should be a Hepa unit which would slide into the front in place of regular filter. I'm going to call JDS Monday to check with them on this.

I've been working on this for a while. The best 1" filter I've been able to find is the newest 3M Elite Allergen 2200 filters. Not sure they are made in 12X24, but I'd like to know. They are MERV 13.

Rick Wynn has some new secondary filters for these units. They are made of a better fabric http://www.wynnenv.com/jds_filters.htm

According to Rick, that is the best that can be done with these ambient filter units.

I do note that Rick does sell HEPA filters that COULD be used to build a custom ambient air filtration unit... And I'm toying with doing it.

    As a reference point only:

    http://www.breathepureair.com/aqe_m33.html#

Note: size, cost and complexity. Even this kind of unit does not reach the "HEPA" definiftion.

OSHA regulates total mass/unit of volume/time of exposure. "HEPA" describes filter performance. MDs talk about particle size and length of exposure.

I can't find a manufacturer that pulls all this together. If you find one on your journey, please post a new thread. Lots of people would like to read about it.

I do not think you need a hepa filter to acheive excellent filtration with these air cleaners. I own the Dylos particle counter that was offered as a group buy back in 2008 on this forum.I bought it calibrated for .5/2.5 micron. So I can see the effectiveness at the finest dust levels.

My air cleaner is an older DELTA unit without speed controls or timer. The Delta uses the felt bags and a prefilter, like most other units I have seen. Like many have discovered, off the shelf filters do not fit in prefilter space. I built an adaptor for the front that will fit an off the shelf filter since they are so much cheaper. I also made the adaptor space thick enough I could put two filters instead of one. I figured a cheap prefilter, and a quality allergen filter next would protect the felt bags and extend their life. I used Filtrete's allergen filter ~ $8.

As expected the two prefilters get most of the dust. The felt bags show almost no dust accumulation. Further, the Dylos particle meter shows them capable of reducing the smallest dust particles down to extreemly low levels. I judge this by the fact that the air cleaner removes dust far below the average outdoor ambient air quality.

I replaced the allergen filter with another cheap filter and it still works as well. I attribute this to the fact that as the filters get dirty, the dirt improves the filter's effectiveness. Considering that the A/C recycles the air over and over must also account for the great results.

Thanks for all the input guys, I did contact JDS and they stated they did not offer a Hepa filter upgrade for my 750 model. Something they did mention may be of interest to those with the older 750 dust cleaner. JDS offers a "kit" to add both a Timer and Remote to your A/C.....$89.99 Shipped directly from JDS.
