    First Dovetail Project

I've been practicing handcut dovetails for several weeks now. I finally decided to try a "real" project - a small box to hold the pencils and junk on my workbench.

A couple years ago my brother gave me some small cherry boards he made from a tree that came down in an ice storm. Being an architecture student, he had access to a very well-outfitted shop. I did this totally neander except for cutting the 4 sides with a chop saw (and the initial milling my brother did). I decided to keep the live edge as an interesting feature and finished with a couple coats of tung oil.

    Thanks for looking,

    Mike,
Those are really fine looking. I see from your bench you have been practicing half bind dovetails too . I recently started trying to cut them myself. I am not there yet .

Salem, yes, I started half-blinds about a week ago. They take longer but only have one show face to worry about. Roy, I'm using the 14 TPI Veritas saw. I have a whole box of practice joints now

Thanks for the kind words -

    Mike

Excellent work, Michael!! Nice and tight. The pile of practice cuts in the back look very familiar - I numbered mine and kept them! Made for an interesting progression.

Take it from someone who had been cutting em for a long time.. those are excellent. Yes.. the half-blinds will need a bit more patience but you will definitely get there from the examples here. They are nice and tight.

    Well done...
