    Square bowl

I wanted to try a square bowl just for the fun of it and I had this bland little block of
California Laurel that wouldn’t be a great loss if I goofed. The turning went well except
that the wood was a little punky in places, so I wet sanded it with 50-50 polly and mineral
spirits and 320 grit. That helped smooth the punkiness out although some of the pin holes
are darker than the surrounding wood. I used a walnut glue block on the faceplate and at
the end left a thin ring on the foot tp provide some contrast. Imagine my surprise when I
hit it with the poly during sanding and this great figure popped out. Of course the walnut ring no longer provided the contrast.

Nice piece of wood Don. It didn't hurt that your skills brought it to life. It is no longer a bland little block of laurel. Good job!

Very nice looking bowl, Don and you're right: That grain really jumps out at you! Looks to me like it was MORE than just a "try"! Well done!

60 grit is a turning tool, ain't it?
