small contemporary coffee table in quilted maple

I just finished this week and its shipping out on Monday. I brought it home for some pics.

Quilted maple and sapele. the curved corners are shop made 1/16" thick veneer over a block of mdf.

Drawers are accessed via touch latches and are hard maple with 5/32" sapele on the fronts.

finish is valspar zenith precat gloss with the finish coat sanded to 2000 then rubbed with 0000 steel wool.

Not my cup of tea design wise but the craftsmanship is superb. Beautiful work. Great dovetails and I love the finish.

I like the table a lot, but I LOVE those chairs. Did you build them? I have a hard time finding contemporary design info for home woodworkers. My interest in interior design is what propelled me into woodworking, which seems like an unusual path.

I am really looking to build a slipper chair with a twist, and those are similar to the twist I am looking for. If you built them I'd love to ask you some questions.

I think contemporary design isnt any different that other genres. There is nothing original. All design is built off of or inspired by previous designs. When I have a design block which I often do. I look at pictures of contemporary designs. Books and magazines like dwell and stick postits on shapes that catch my eye. I do think building contemporary furniture is alot easier than tradition furniture though. Thats great for me.

Interesting piece, gorgeous grain, and excellent craftsmanship -- those drawers really disappear when closed! I'm wondering about the dovetails though - are they decorative? The reason I ask is that the sapele fronts don't seem thick enough for those dovetails, and also there is an apparent conflict between the dovetail joint and the tongue & groove joint at the corners of the maple drawer boxes.

I don't quite understand how the dovetails conflict with the drawer joint
The dovetails were added after the drawers were assembled and although they are decorative they do strengthen the joint as they pass thru the sides and glue into the maple fronts. After they were glued in and parred flush the sapele was laminated to the front.

I wasnt planning on the dovetails but it came to me and I routed them in.

Ah, I suppose 'conflict' was a poor choice of words on my part - I just meant that the joints seem to occupy the same space, and I didn't understand how it was done. Thank you for the explanation.

Beautifully done. I missed this the first time around. It suits the room where the pics were taken and I assume it will be just as at home at the buyers location. My parents blessed me with an appreciation of a wide array of styles. My personal style is fairly narrow but, I appreciate the beauty in that table and the drawer mechanism is icing on the cake. Great combination of materials too.
