Project Completion Gloat

I have completed another project!! This is a cargo shelf for my friend's PT Cruiser. He is a proud Scotsman and he wanted his coat of arms and his tartan included in the project. He will be taking this project to car shows in the Seattle area.It is made from 4/4 ash and some walnut burl. The tile is a laser engraved sea green granite. The finish is three coats of General Finish's Outdoor Oil. I love this finish! It is a clear finish, but gives a nice light brown colour to the wood. Then there are two coats of wipe on poly and finished with two coats of Watco's satin wax. Questions? Comment? Critisisms?

I went to the UPS store to pack and ship the shelf to my friend. They put it in a 3'x4'x6" picture frame box and then wanted $60 to ship it!! Apparently, it is considered oversized and I have to pay out the wazoo. I did a little research and found that if I narrow the box to 2'x4', I can ship it for $15. Man... what a difference!

Yowza! That IS quite a difference! Sheesh...You could have a pretty heavy piece of equipment shipped for that much! Anyhow, glad you found a more economical alternative. And, the piece itself is very classy. I love the Walnut Burl...Really set it off.

FedEX Ground is usually a lot more reasonable than UPS...and don't forget when you go to the "UPS Store", you are dealing with a franchise operation that tacks on their own take on top of the UPS charges...packing yourself and going to the terminal eliminates that surcharge.

Shipping with Fedex ground may be cheaper, but that are on my long term hate list. One evening the fedex guy knocked on the door and invited himself in with a package. He is lucky he did not do that to my neighhbors two houses down because he would have been beaten severly. I called fedex about this incident and their position was "Oh well, what can we do about it?"

So yeah, fedex is my shipment method of last resort.

Dan, I'm sure there is more to that story that's inappropriate for here...and you should do business with folks you feel most comfortable with. I'm blessed with great delivery folks from the majors so my advice was based on my experience with cost when shipping things out.
