Creeker's Weekend Accomplishments....

Well, another weekend has come and gone and it was the last weekend before Christmas.

I've been really busy in the shop trying to get various Christmas presents done and now I'm down to only 3 presents and one is for the LOML and another is for the LOML Jr. I just finished the one for the LOML Jr. last night and am feverishly working on getting the LOML's done in time for Christmas. I should make it as long as Rockler comes through with replacing a broken music movement.

So what did YOU do this weekend?

Saturday being Sue's turn to host her family for the monthly poker game, I helped her prepare the house in the morning and then bailed out since I don't play poker . Trying to work in the basement shop with a dozen or more people carousing overhead isn't my idea of fun. I gathered up a hand full of turning tools and went over to the house of a Creeker who should be posting a very nice gloat. Oh Roger.... The afternoon was spent talking woodworking and playing with his new toy... errr tool.

Sunday I made a mount for my bench grinder and installed it on a recently purchased pedestal stand. It now lives right next to my lathe so I don't have to walk to the next room to sharpen my turning tools. The rest of the day was spent ripping and jointing 12/4 tiger maple into the right sized blanks for some cabriole legs for a Queen Anne drop leaf corner table which is sometimes called a handkerchief table. An early dinner shortened my working time. The toughest part of the project is now behind me... deciding what to make and getting started.

Still working slowly on the woodshop remodel. Fed the outdoor woodboiler 3 times Saturday and Sunday each. Temps are running around 0 to 7 before the wind chill, winds were gusting to 25-30 mph until Sunday evening. Wood shop with the hot water radiator, and not much insulation in the walls yet was staying around 50 Degrees. Should be awesome once I get the insulation up. Friend says he's got a big cherry log if I want it. Guess I'll have to take it.

We had a lot of family and office christmas party stuff going on. My wife Shan and I celebrated our 28th wedding anniversary on Friday. Being the consummate family man that I am, I took her and the two kids still in residence to Medieval Times. I had a lot of fun. Shan and the kids absolutely LOVED it. Shan is nuts for horses, and their Andalusians were gorgeous.

Saturday we had the office Christmas party, and after church on Sunday we had a dinner for those of us who work in Power Kids (drama for the 3- to 5-year-old set).

In between those, I put in a little time making the rolling base for my jointer. Pics will be forthcoming when I get it all set up.

It was a shop-free weekend, but not without woodworking activities...went to the show in Edison NJ on Sunday to help Robert Tarr bring home his new MM16 and to deliver my "old" workbench to its new owner, John Shuk. Picked up a few goodies myself, but only spend about a hundred bucks. (Not including the stop at the nice New Jersey wine store on the way home... )

Spent a good part of Saturday with Dr. SWMBO in various activities around the house and out-and-about. DVD of the week was Hudsucker Proxy, an enjoyable Cohn bros. film with Paul Newman, Chas Durning and a few other talented folks. It was made very much like an older, classic film, but in color. Recommended.

But the best thing about the weekend is that as of late Friday afternoon when I stepped off the train home from NYC where I had meetings for the day...I went on vacation for the rest of the year. (Have to use up the 8 days I have left over from 2003 or lose them... ) Happy Holidays, folks!

Began cutting the cherry for my grandmothers videotape holder, decided to add a drawer and use that quilted bubinga veneer I made in my first spacebag journey as the drawer front. Made a story stick to line up the rails for holding the cassette tapes, then looked and noticed my plan was off a little. hehe. I cut the sides 6" deep, umm VHS tapes are only 4" deep. LOL. easy fix however.


hung out on sunday all day, veneered another board with Makore. Watched season finale of "The Wire" and called it a night.

I finished up a couple of projects for LOML. I small test box with rotating lids and Jewelry box. Both are made from Wenge and Curly Maple. I wrapped up the Jewelry box before shooting a pic, so it will have to wait until after XMAS.

Watched a couple of pretty good flicks: Collateral and Bourne Supremacy.

Tried to stay warm, temp was in the low single digits Sunday. Yuck. Warmer today though with a high supposely around mid 40's.

Finaly moved all my machines into the new shop. Still need to get started on some kind of bench. Finished a small intarsia project. Went to a neighborhood Christmas open house and got a chance to meet a lot of my new neighbors. Not a woodworker in the bunch.

As Dave Anderson indicated above, he came over to the shop on Saturday for a few hours...Dave lives about a half hour away and we are both active in our WW Guild so it may not really qualify as a "visit from a creeker" since we see each other all the time

While he was here we managed to make a few shavings on my new toy
I mentioned this briefly in an earlier post and picked up the beast a week ago. I'll post a mini-review of the lathe and the pick-up/uncrating/set-up process over on the turning forum...all positive news!

So Dave brought over a few of his tools and we did a little spindle turning to break it in...I got to try a couple of different skew types and really got to enjoy the new machine. Bowl turning attempts will come in the near future...after I've watched Bill G's video several more times Sure beats the 1950 vintage craftsmen lathe that it replaced!

Oh...by the way, in the lower right hand corner of the pic (partially obscured) is a new Delta 15" planer that I picked up during the local PBS fundraising auction.... (gloat and pic credit all in one) SWMBO was watching the auction and brought that item to my attention!!

Plain and simple - shop time. Haven't been spending much time in the shop this year. This weekend I actually had time to make a couple of pens and clean. Seems like all year I have been working on house stuff.

Much of Saturday was spent entertaining my better half's family who were up for an early Christmas celebration. An hour or two late Saturday and a vast amount of Sunday was dedicated to trimming out the cabinet enclosure that houses the new propane fireplace that will be the heat source for the new bar room. Topped off the face of the fireplace cabinet with large oak crown moulding and fabbed up some side trim that got some special router treatment and some of Sunday was geared toward fabbing up a jig that allowed me to make some dentil moulding that nested right up below the oak crown. Used black walnut for the dentil moulding to break up the oak cabinet. I will be using walnut here and there throughout the room as I think it goes great with the naturally finished oak.

Monday night after work I fabbed up the removeable top of the corner cabinet with a field of 3/4" oak ply with a 2 1/2" nose of solid red oak. The glue up pic is below. It still has some additions to be added along the back two sides that will nestle up against the corner walls.

I was in the shop Saturday night and Sunday, but it was pulling the motor in the truck. It's not rebuildable, so I will be getting and entirely new short block built and reworking the heads I got last year from a friend. Good news is that the motor will be all new parts on the bottom end.

I also got a donor truck for the rear axle it has (mine has seen it's day). The only thing not new will be the tranny after this swapathon...

I turned a couple of small bowls, but the big accomplishemnt was fixing the carb on my antique lawn mower and getting the mower to run. A helicoil was blocking the fuel pickup in the carb. I ground a hacksaw blade end to a wide V and managed to back the helicoil out enough to get hold of it with pliers. I then backed out two threads, ground them off and happy day the fuel pickup was unplugged. Intalled the carb, got the engine started and mowed the grass for the last time this year.
