    Kitchen island and top

It's taken almost a year to build this island, but I finally prevailed and it's installed and operational. The island is poplar and plywood. The counter top is a 4/4 maple lamination, almost 10' long. I smoothed the top with a Stanley #7 and Veritas bevel up smoother. It was my first foray into kitchen cabinets and handplanes. Thanks for looking!

  2. Very nice. I like the contrast between the painted cabinet and the maple. Wally

Looks nice Matt! What kind of paint did you use? Is it a milk paint?
    Thanks,

Jeff, the paint is just acrylic enamel from the Borg. Thanks for looking!

what did you use on the maple top?

I'm doing something similar...but smaller...and the top is my next step...been bouncing back and forth between buying granite to match the counter, or getting maple and making butcher block type top

For the top I made a wiping varnish from varnish and mineral spirits. 5 coats, then a couple coats of wax. I debated other options, but in the end varnish seemed the best fit for us.
