    Millers Falls Chuck Springs

I just bought an aged 77A eggbeater for $8.00, and it after disassembling the chuck, it seems the jaw springs are pretty kinked, probably from an earlier disassembly episode.

Does anyone know of a reasonable replacement spring for these chucks?

    Thanks,

    Brian

That's a good little drill. I found one with the closed gear housing--I guess you'd call it a crank case. Good for you that you're not letting bad springs discourage you. For spring repairs I've heard of two fixes:

    1. Clicky-type ball point pens. If it's the right diameter, just trim to correct length.
    2. Make your own from piano wire or wire from a hobby house. To make your own, I've seen a video where someone used an electrical drill and -slowly- wound the wire around a drill bit in the chuck. Those hobby places also have springs for RC model parts.

I don't think they have to be like perfect mass-produced springs in order to work. A thorough cleaning with a brush and a little sewing machine oil help the jaws travel. WK fine tools also has some info on refurbishing eggbeater drills.

If the springs are all there but just bent up, you might be able to bend them back into shape with a couple pair of small pliers.
Other sources of new springs are hardware stores and McMaster Carr online.

I've got a Goodell-Pratt missing its springs altogether. My local hardware store's spring collection doesn't go small enough. My plan, when I get around to working on it, if ball-point-pen springs aren't small enough, is to watch for a cheap eggbeater at a garage sale with good springs and cannibalize it. I don't think the loss of one plastic-wheeled eggbeater drill will alter the course of history in any negative way.

    Thanks

For your responses. I haven't had time to take the chuck apart during the week, but I'm going to do so tomorrow (Friday) night. I'll try straightening the springs and measure them, and (thanks to Johnny K) I may be able to buy some new spring stock.
