Talk me down from the ledge

I find myself obsessing, I mean thinking about buying the delta 46-460. I didn't expect to have the cash, but thanks to a refinance I have no house payment this month.

My current lathe is adequate for everything I do except power. It's got the 1/2 hp variable speed motor kit from PSI on it. Works great, but when I try to do a bowl bigger than 4", it takes a lot of time. A 9" ash bowl took 11 hours. 9 of that taking light cuts because that's all it can handle.

Does the delta actually have enough power to spin a 10" x 5" chunk of black walnut? How about Osage or Locust? Do I dare dream of a hollow form?

I know the Delta is a spectacular machine. My only reservation is the power. Is it really that much more than I have now?

And no, I will not consider a full-size lathe. I definitely do not have the budget for that, and I'm not running 220 to the garage.

I have used it for 12" x 9" rough blanks. Then used the Macnaughten coring system to core bowls with. So to me, yes, it has the power and heft to do bigger stuff.

Scott, I love my Delta 46-460!!

This is a cherry bowl I turned - 11.25" finished width.

And, this is a burl bowl I did with a finished width of 12".

The Delta will do whatever you ask of it!!

The responsible thing would be to put the extra money toward the principle on your house or save it for emergencies, or buy something really needed..... You will enjoy your new lathe. I love mine.

Paul is right. The responsible thing would be to put that money toward the principle on the house. But then, why would you want to be that responsible? You always got a house payment, you ain't always got the shot at upgrading the lathe...might as well jump!

You guys are horrible. Every time I look at this forum someone else is talking about that Delta lathe. Especially this month with the great Woodcraft sale. I think I'll be ordering mine with the bed extension next week.
