Good grief. That cute little printer/cutter is just about what I almost paid for a 48" version about 10 years ago. I see now that one is $22,000. Prices seem to have gone up.

Dang, I didn't know that had printer cutters like that 10 years ago. I was running an handful of Encads an a large format Colorspan and they were
limited. Seems the Encads were around $6k-$8K back then. That's what happened as the company I worked got me out of the darkroom and
into the digital age. I ran a bank of Encads, a 72" Colorspan, a solvent printer I think it was a "Rhino" or something like that and a couple of
Durst Lambda laser photographic imagers. It turned me from a craftsman in the darkroom to production. The files were prepreped I maintained color control on the printers and set them printing most runs took over an hour back then to run so I could keep
up with them. (I was younger than too ;-) You always said a prayer when you started
the Encads as they were prone to blow a head earlier than anticipated.

I think the main sell on this is prototyping short runs with metallics. This is the only
I am aware of with metallic capabilities. I used to have an Alps 5000 that printed with
dye sub ribbons it had metallics and opaque white. It was the only one of it's kind
about 12years ago. Just letter size, but I did some things no one had seen before.

At least there is a desktop self contained UV printer now under $30k.... That's a start
5 years from now they may have one I can afford!

Cool, but too pricey for me. I print and then manually register in the laser cutter.

Are there any desktop printers, currently in production, that will print white?

I think BusJet has one. I know a few years back there were one or two out there
I believe they both had issues with the white though.

Yeah a bit high, but newer technology always is. I wonder how the ink delivery system
handles the metallic and white. At least the manufacturers see a need and are starting to
make some models. The UV printer would fit me more, but not till it gets to the $10k area.

I saw that BusJet at a show and felt that the white was not sufficiently opaque. That was 4 or 5 years ago. I searched high and low for an old Alps but I think the model train/plane builders have cornered the market on them.

I'm headed to the Indy show in a couple of hours and I'll check out this Roland stuff, though it's way out of my price range.

The VersaStudio printer looks very nice (with the metallic ink), but 20" seems a bit limiting.
