Thread: base cabinet tops - what material

  1. Do a little research using phone book, internet, and local home centers. Find out who provides the home centers with their custom laminate countrtops. Then contact the manufacturer directly to see if they sell damaged, or incorrectly made countertops to the general public.

I have a fabricator a few miles away that will sell pices of countertop that are often just old no longer stocked color choices for less than what it would cost me to make it.

The 36" or wider pieces of island top can be ripped in half to make nice shelving.

Fabricators are often willing to sell very reasonably, cut off pieces of raw laminate material that you can use to make your own top.

If you are near an IKEA, I've heard they have castoff solid wood counter tops (butcher block style) for sale cheap. I'm sure they are damaged, but for shop stuff working around that should be no problem.
