    Shop shelf finishing

I'm building some shelves in my shop based on the Woodsmith lumber rack.

P1020902.JPG (Lumber rack I've already built. For the shelves the arms will be a bit longer).

For each level, I'll cut a plywood shelf with slots to fit around the arms. What would be a good , tough, and inexpensive finish for these shelves? It's for the shop, so I'm not making any fashion statements, just looking for protection (and nothing that will stick to the stuff sitting on the shelves).

    Thanks!

I'd leave them bare unless your environment demands a finish. I would think not as you are storing lumber there ;-) I tend to hit exposed areas on such things with whatever shellac is left on a rag when I'm done with it.

These shelves won't be storing lumber, they'll be replacing cheapo, rickety, metal units with particle board shelves that I may have paid upwards of $20 a piece for several years ago. I think I can get better use of the space with something I build and hang, plus the likelihood of stuff collapsing and ending up in a pile on the floor will be drastically reduced.

I like shellac too and that was my first thought. I think I'll have acquired one of those Earlix HVLP units before I get around to building these units (new electrical has to some through the wall behind these shelves, so I'll be doing the wiring and hanging new shop lights before getting to the shelves) so I may use them as an excuse to spray some shellac!
