Sorry to hear that you are hurting Gary. Hope there is good news with your visit to the Dr. on Friday.

Gary, I should have checked in over here!! From your emails, I have gotten a good feel for the progression, but I was not aware you have a build thread going with this project! Really a bummer on the knee - maybe this is where Geri becomes your apprentice?!?!? You could be shop foreman, and handle your duties from an easy chair. She may even be able to get you a cold beer every now and then. Let me know how that works out for you!!

In all seriousness, this might be a time to re-direct the energies and fire back up the lathe - we miss you in the Turner's Forum!! One can get quite a bit of light weight turning done from a shop stool.

Hang in there, and I hope the knee situation improves, at least in the short run until you can get a repair done.

    A little shop time....

Well I can finally walk without crutches now. Not very fast or far but we are on the mend....
My therapy starts next week and I hope it gives even more relief before I get into see the specialist.
But who knows when that will be..
You really got to love our health care system here in Alberta.

Bonus of the no crutch syndrome is I got some shop time today. Even though it wasn't long, it was shop time.
Got a little more BLO on a couple of the carcasses. Only two more to get the BLO bath. And did a little scrap burning in my burn barrel.

    1.jpg

Here is a shot of what will be torn apart. I have a little 10'X12' wing off the main part of my shop.
It's the "stash it here" part of my ship...
My wife wanted some more cabinets in the garage so these will be moved there.
The left side of the pic will be where my wood rack will be relocated to.
All my clamps will stay where they are. But the walls will get painted white.
Over time this is also where my cyclone will live.

    2.jpg

Well at least we are moving forward again.
Slowly, but we are moving forward.

Hope everyone is getting some shop time.

Gary, sorry to read of your knee issues. Take it easy and let us know how you are doing. My left knee has been acting up lately but not to the point that I want to see a doctor yet.
    Please help support the Creek.

Don't wait as long as me to see the Dr. Bruce....
The trip to the emergency room was not a lot of fun.

    Good Day to the Creek...
So we are moving forward. Real slowly mind you, but forward never the less...
I'm walking with a cane now and get to see the orthopedic surgeon next week.
That is way faster than I expected but it's a good thing.
Who knows how fast for surgery. At least I'm going to see the guy with the knife.

All the cabinets have the BLO on them for my miter saw station upgrade now.
These can now be moved so I can concentrate on the doors for the morticing station.

    P1010623.jpg

8 sliding shelves and a few drawers that will have hand cut dovetails.
Should make for some real good storage.
With the carcasses all at this stage I now can work with solid wood..

I hope everyone is getting more shop time than me.

    Shop Time this Weekend!

The gimp got some shop time this weekend....
Not a ton but enough to get a couple of the door parts machined.
My lumber rack is off and the wall painted white.
Slow process if one is hobbling around.
Now as the cabinets are done they can go on the wall.

    wall.jpg

First two doors of the five. Panels were glued up this morning.
    door frames.jpg

Tomorrow night we hope to cut the panels into three pieces and put a coat of BLO on them before final assembly.

Hope everyone is getting a little shop time...

    A Couple on the Wall

    Good Day to the Creek.

We finally get to put a few on the wall...
And I'm starting to get a bit of my floor space back!
With this knee shop time is still pretty limited so the pace is still pretty slow.
But upside we are moving forward.

Now these three doors will get the final BLO bath.
With any panel door I pre-oil the panel so no raw wood is exposed during seasonal changes.
You've really got to love how cherry darkens. These new cabinets have a lot of catching up to do.

I hope everyone has a safe and Happy holiday season!

But enough to use up the last of my cherry and maple to get this far.
All but one of the carcasses with the faces on and most with the BLO bath.
    Total of 15.

Keen eyes will notice the grain running the wrong way on the middle cabinet.
Just trying to keep the waste to a minimum...
This will be a TV cabinet so I don't think it will be that noticeable.

After work we made a quick trip to the lumber guy and we are all stocked up again.
We will give this new stuff a couple of days to settle down and we will be back at it..

i was all set to join in with everyone else's compliments (cherry ply for a shop? not exactly going low end, are we.), but that cabinet with the grain running the wrong way. man, that just ruins the whole project. i don't see how you can let any of those cabinets into your shop. i'll take them off your hands as a favor to a fellow creeker, ok?

more seriously, that's really nice work. any chance for a few close ups of the blade storage drawer? looks like a great way to store blades.

    Xmas Edition....

    Good day to the Creek!
I hope Santa was good to everyone yesterday...

The last of this first phase are on the wall now.
Lowers are ready to have a little electrical run through them get get power to my mortiser.
She is starting to come together!

I have moved my general dust collector for these pics so one can get a little tour of this corner of my shop.
As my lumber rack is now off the wall I have a couple of bigger pieces of wood on the floor.
In my Neander Haven there is a chunk of 12/4 cherry and in front of the new cabinets I have a nice piece of figured Bubinga 8/4 about 24"X 13'.

    1.jpg

    3.jpg

My stationary tools include a uni saw and a general canada 8" jointer with a byrd head.
From the jointer to the bench is around 65" and if I ever need more outfeed I would just move the bench 8" back.
This has only been done a couple of times.
The bench was built to my specs by LN a couple of years ago. Made for a lefty. 8" long, wagon vice, and a scandinavian vice for dovetailing.
The mortiser will live on the middle cabinet with the other two being outfeed tables.

    2.jpg

Now to make a few tops. And then a few drawers....
These tops will be out of maple with cherry trim. The cherry ones I have at my Neander haven look great but dust shows badly...

Hope everyone is getting a little shop time over the holiday season!

Gary, this is really coming together!!! Beautiful work, and a great addition to the Zimmel "Cherry Corner". I would have to think somewhere down the road, Geri is going to want a new kitchen after all of this - and, I know just the guy for the job!

I guess I know now why I am not seeing anything round from your lathe!

    Thanks John.
I got a little time to get the doors oiled and back on the cabinets...
In a year or so everything should balance out in coloring.
Now we can start to move some tools into these uppers.

The plan is slowly coming together.

    Looking REALLY nice!!!

    Gary,
Great work on the cabinets, if I may ask what are the dimensions of your face frames? The stiles look to be about 1 1/2" wide, as do the rails, is that correct? Also how think is the face frame material looks to be about 1".

The hinges appear to be mounted to the face frame also, would you mind taking a pick of the hinges in the cabinet on the door?

The reason I ask is I have some cabinets coming up this summer for the wife and these are very similar to the style that she is wanting.

Thank you and again great work!
    Rob
