    first segmented bowl

This is really my second, but the first one was very small, made from scrap and good practice. Even with practice, I would have been lost without the help of Mr Dennis Edwards.

This one is birch and bloodwood. It's about 9.5 inches in diameter and about 4.5 inches deep. Finish so far is one coat of walnut oil.

Quick to turn, but it took a while to get it all glued up.

    Critiques welcome.

Your second segmented piece?! No way!

I really like the combination of woods and the pattern here...sure would like to see it from some other angles. I haven't had the patience yet to try anything segmented...this certainly sets the bar pretty high.

Now that's just showing off!! I like it, amazing work for 2nd piece. On my turners bucket list to try.
Does this mean you're hooked to segmenting or was it more like...OK, that was fun, now where is that big blank I had.

    Thanks, guys.

Tim: I definitely want to try a couple more. There is a lot of room for improvement, and I would like to see if I can do better. I used the Segeasy plate for this one, and this is about as big as one can go with that jig. I want BIGGER!!! So, I need to make a jig before I do anything more. Dennis Edwards was a great help, and he has a movie on his site on how to make a jig.

This doesn't compare with roughly out very wet wood, though. Turning this was more nerve wracking than fun. Turning wet is just plain fun.

Grant, that is some nice work, and a good wood combo. I suspect the solid bottom on this one will not cause much problem given the construction method and the freedom of movement the segment pieces have.

Thanks much, John. I hope that you are right. The bottom piece is just under 3" at its largest and about 2.5" at its narrowest. I thought about it, but figured that I would be ok. Only time will tell, I suppose. I should have used rubber cement on the segments. :-)
