    Wheeler, Madden & Clemson Saw.

I think this is a Wheeler, Madden & Clemson number 24 saw.

The medallion has: Warrented Pat. Dec 21, 1869 Superior.

The blade etching is faint but I can just make out a globe in the center and a date 1853 in the banner on the right side.

I found an old advertisement from Smith, Tibbetts & Co. Hardware which shows this same saw with the globe etching and the same handle but it only says it is a "Stanard No. 24".

This blade is 26" and 7 ppi. It is a nice straight saw with only minor surface rust. I am wondering if anyone can tell me anything about the saw and about how old it is?

    Larry,
Your saw is a Wheeler, Madden & Clemson #24 the shape of the etch, plate and handle all match the description in the National Saw Company catalogueof 1895. The handle is a Holden patent handle and it should have the date stamped by the top hook, Pat. June 3, 1879. The earliest of these saws will have split-nuts in the handles so it may date from the 1880's until the companys demise before the first World War. I would guess that one is from the 1890's. The handle should be made of beech, the etch of the globe should have a ribbon running thru it with "Standard" thru the center and "No 24" on the left and the date on the right side of the ribbon. Nice find!
