Thread: what is this wood?

    what is this wood?

I have a some cabinet doors I recycled from a display home. I have used them in my small office and I need to make some drawer fronts to match.
I have a guess about what the wood may be but I'd like your opinion. Thanks. Rob

I'm thinking it is maple but I have never used maple before so I am unsure.
I'm also thinking it might be hard maple going by the end grain??

In appearance, are hard maple and pacific coast maple the same?

I agree that it looks like maple.

    Definitely Maple.

Looks like hard maple to me, though the right hand stile and the panel remind me a bit of cherry. Given the overall look of the wood though, I'm going with Eastern Maple.

Ok I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw the right stile and thought cherry at first. However, i do agree, overall looks like maple.

That right stile suggests ALDER to me. But I don't see any of the rays that are typical of Alder, so I'm thinking Maple after all.

It also looks a little like some birch I've worked with, which if you're making companion parts by hand, I find a little easier to work than maple. Maple is also a little more annoying to me when trying to get a consistent color between pieces, but I'm not the best finisher by far. But in general, looks like maple to me.

It is definatly Hard maple. The right style is just a little mineral discoloration that is very common in maple. At first I thought it was western or soft maple but after further review it is all hard maple.

It is maple but I don't think one can easily tell soft from hard maple with a small picture (or even with a few pictures for that matter).
