It's not obsolete yet, even though Sketchup and other software solutions are available, sometimes it's just as easy to knock out a quick layout the good 'ol fashioned way on grid paper. This freebie is configurable to produce a variety of grids, colors, line widths, sheet sizes, etc. and saves it in a .PDF file for you to keep on your local drive.

Good post. I tracked down PDFs for various graph paper layouts a while back just in case I out of quadrile pads. I'm no design guru, but I think better with graph paper. My favorite is the blotter size (if that's the correct term, I'm talking about the big desk mat sized format). Those are a little hard to find...
The hex graph paper they make for use with dice and pencil games (like Dungeons and Dragons) is useful too. I think it would be better as octagons, but it would exactly be symmetrical...
